Bat Rolling

What is bat rolling?

Bat rolling originated in Southern California in the late part of 1999 or the early part of 2000 and has since become the default break-in method for most new bats. Prior to bat rolling, players would typically break-in their bats by using them. Around the 500 hit mark, most bats tend to feel much “hotter” than they feel out of the wrapper because as pressure is applied to the carbon fiber and plastic resin layers of the bat, the fibers stretch significantly increasing the bat's trampoline effect. Bat rolling is a mechanical procedure that achieves an optimal break-in at an accelerated rate by mechanically applying incremental pressure to the bat's barrel and sweet spot.

How are bats being rolled today?

Over the last decade, accelerated break-in techniques have evolved and have been improved upon a great deal. Some initial ideas were to forcefully strike the bat with a rubber mallet or to apply pressure to the bat by placing it inside of a vice. Today, bats are being rolled inside of a vertical vice designed to allow for perpendicular and parallel passes between nylon or plastic rollers attached to the top and bottom of the vice – an improved hybrid between the two initial ideas. Vice pressures are gradually increased as the bat is rolled through the rollers several times in a perpendicular and parallel fashion at each pressure increment until a maximum pressure setting is reached. The entire process takes approximately 15-20 minutes to perform and the end result is a blazing “hot” bat.

Why should I roll my bat?

Having your bat rolled by Blazing Bats will take your game to the next level. You'll hit the ball harder. You'll hit the ball further. You won't have to spend any unnecessary time at the batting cage breaking in your bat and your bat won't have any dead spots because it will have been mechanically broken-in in an optimal fashion. Roll with Blazing Bats and smoke your competition!
